Volunteer Overseas - Cultural Extremes - FAQs
Below is a list of frequently asked questions which relate to all
projects for Cultural Extremes. Specific questions which relate to
individual projects are addressed in the information packets for
each project. If you have any additional questions don’t hesitate to
contact us
Application
Who is eligible to apply for a Cultural Extremes Project?
If you are 18 or older, regardless of your background or nationality you are eligible to apply for a Cultural Extremes Project. Participants younger than 18 can be accepted with special permission or as part of a larger group. In order to teach English, however, you must be a native or fluent speaker
of English.
Are there any restrictions?
For all project placements you must be eligible to enter the country
in which the project is based, either on a tourist visa or its
equivalent. Also, due to the Ministry of Education’s regulations,
the Rural Thailand Project requires that you have a Bachelor’s
degree.
How does the application process work?
Once you have chosen the project you are most interested in, submit
your on-line application. Your application will be reviewed and you
will receive notification of your acceptance. Once you have been
accepted into the project of your choice, a deposit of US$500 then
secures your place. This payment can be made at our secure on-line
payment site or via personal check within the US. The balance of the
project fee will be due upon arrival at your project destination.
Pre-departure
Is airfare included in the project fee?
No. However, by arranging your own flights, you then have the
flexibility to determine your arrival and departure dates and
subsequent travel plans.
Is insurance included in the project fee?
No. Again flexibility is the key. You know yourself better than
anyone else and are best able to make decisions on what you believe
is important with respect to your health and security.
How do I get a Visa?
You will need to apply and pay for a visa yourself; however we will
provide you with information on how to obtain it.
Fees/Payment
What is included in the project fee?
The total project fee includes pre-departure assistance, airport
pick-up and transportation to your TEFL course location, a 4 week
TEFL course and certification, in-country orientation, language
lessons, transportation to your project placement, accommodation
throughout the program and access to 24 hour field support.
How do I pay for the project?
A $500 non-refundable deposit secures your place in the Cultural
Extremes project you’ve chosen and is payable on-line or via
personal check within the US. The balance of the project fee is due
to be paid in full at the TEFL course location and is payable in
cash (in either US dollars or the currency of the country you are
doing the project in) or by credit card.
On Arrival
Will I be met at the airport?
Yes. We will arrange for you to be met at the airport and
transported to the TEFL course location within the country of your
project.
Can I travel before I begin my project?
Yes, absolutely. Just make sure you arrive on the assigned start
date for your project.
TEFL Course
What is an average course day like?
Class time is generally 9:00 am to 4:45 pm, with mid morning and
afternoon breaks and a lunch break. For approximately two weeks, you
will be preparing to teach—learning all of the things you need to
know in order to be successful in the classroom. For the other two
weeks, you will be teaching each morning and preparing your
materials in the afternoons.
