Volunteer Abroad - Countries to Volunteer
Thailand
The gateway to South East Asia, Thailand has long been considered a
favorite destination by travelers all over the world. It’s a country
steeped in historic culture with sacred monastic ruins and beautifully
restored temples, exotic islands, sublime mountain scenery, amazing
nightlife, a tradition of unmatched kindness and hospitality to
visitors not to mention one of the world’s most delicious cuisines.
The opportunity to immerse yourself in Thai culture is one you don’t
want to miss. You will be rewarded with extraordinary friendships, a
fresh perspective on the world and, over time, an intercultural
awareness that is only possible through living, working and breathing
a culture. As a participant in a Cultural Extremes placement in
Thailand, you will be helping to improve the quality of life in
communities that could normally not afford the skills a native
English-speaker can offer.
The majority of Cultural Extremes placements are located in small
towns in Rayong Province, along the eastern seaboard of Thailand about
200 km south east of Bangkok. Having once relied on fishing and
agriculture for its economy, Rayong Province is rapidly becoming an
industrial area. The coastal region of the province has over 100km of
beaches and coves with beautiful tropical islands just offshore. The
interior is home to scenic mountains interspersed with flat plains,
forested land, fruit and rubber plantations as well as the beautiful
Khao Chamao National Park.
Egypt
Mention Egypt and most people immediately conjure up images of ancient
civilizations and the great monuments of the Nile Valley. Indeed,
travelers have been marveling at the historic wonders of Egypt for
thousands of years. Now modern life very much co-exists with its grand
past opening up the opportunity to explore Egypt on a much wider
scale. From the diversity of the Sinai desert including lush oases to
the striking underwater life of the red
sea to magnificent Mediterranean beaches, Egypt continues to impress.
The Cultural Extremes placement is located in the beautiful city of
Alexandria. Alexandria is a unique fusion of history and cosmopolitan
living situated on the periphery of the bright blue Mediterranean Sea.
Already a blend of cultures in itself, the city makes for a
distinctive intercultural experience. The influence of the
Mediterranean, the Middle East, Islam and Coptic Christianity are all
apparent. Amble aimlessly through the streets and immerse yourself in
the extraordinary kindness and generosity of the Egyptian people. The
richness and complexity of Egypt is epitomized here in this historic
and grand city.
India
Namaskar, welcome to Incredible India, where culture
echoes,
tradition speaks, beauty enthrals and diversity delights. Bounded by
the majestic Himalayan ranges in the north and edged by an endless
stretch of golden beaches, India is a vivid kaleidoscope of
landscapes, magnificent historical sites and royal cities, misty
mountain retreats, colourful people, rich cultures and festivities.
The timeless mystery and beauty of India has been waiting for you for
5000 years, always warm and inviting, a place of infinite variety -
one that favours you with different facets of its fascination every
time you visit India.
The Cultural Extremes placement is located in Kolkata and other cities
in West Bengal, Orissa. In 1690, Job Charnok, an employee for the East
India Company chose this site (now known as Kolkata) for a British
trade settlement. The site was selected carefully, being protected by
the Hooghly River on the west, a creek to the north, and by salt lakes
about two and a half miles to the east. At the time there were three
large villages along the east bank of the river Ganges, named,
Sutanuti, Gobindapur and Kalikata. These three villages were bought by
the British from local land lords.
China
Have you ever wanted to see China, but not as a tourist from 5-star
hotel windows but the real China, where 1.2 billion people call home,
with
bustling markets, huge cities and surprising open spaces.
Your journey can begin in the bustling Pearl River Delta in the new
city of Zhuhai, just an hour away from the SAR and former British
Colony of Hong Kong. This is where you will spend nearly two weeks
studying Chinese and Teaching Techniques.
But that is just the beginning of your adventure. From there you will
be placed in a needy Chinese school for four weeks. As a Teaching
Assistant to a Chinese English teacher you will see China from a way
few outsiders have while providing needed assistance in the classroom.
At the completion of the program you are free to stay on and work if
you and the school agree or we can find you a fully-paid position in
China.
